With 2016 here, most of us give some thought to what we can do to better ourselves in the coming year. Even if you’re not someone who makes a resolution to take better care of yourself, this is something that we can all improve upon.
Below you will find some practical tips to help take better care of yourself in 2016.
1. Exercise – Start Small, Be Consistent
We all know that exercise is an important aspect of our health, but following through with it can be a challenge. The tip that we give our patients it to start small but to be consistent. Even the little things throughout the day can be a great starting point for exercise.
One of the best things you can do to get started is to walk for 30 minutes a day, outside of what you might be doing at work. If walking is too easy, you can substitute in 30 minutes of your workout of choice. Though the key is consistency. Doing this 3-5 times a week depending on your level of activity at work will help you reach those health goals.
2. Diet – Moderation Not Deprivation
As with exercise, I think we all know that what we put in our body has an impact on our health. Most of us have some bad eating habits, however the positive is that it gives us something to work on. Changing your diet can seem like a daunting task, however here are some steps to make it easier.
The first thing to do is moderation. For example a soda once a week can be a good treat, however if you are drinking multiple sodas every day that is a ton of sugar and empty calories. If you find yourself having a habit like this try to slowly limit your intake of that unhealthy item. Maybe start to do only one soda a day, then one every other day etc. This way you can make small gains in your progress but not having to make dramatic changes all at once.
Depriving yourself of foods is never a healthy choice. Your body needs fuel to keep you going throughout the day. Eat clean, whole foods and avoid processed junk and chemicals. When you feel like indulging in a cookie, make it from scratch rather than buying them processed from the store. Drink plenty of water, and give your body the nutrition it deserves.
3. Eat Healthy and Be Happy
The other tip that is one of the most important – in my opinion – is don’t get discouraged if you slip up. We are all human and make mistakes. Don’t let one mistake ruin your plan. Maybe you have been great with drinking less soda, then one day you slip up and have several in one day. Don’t let this get you down and cause you to abandon your plan of action. Forgive yourself and get back on track as soon as you can! You will be much happier in the long run.
When you do indulge, enjoy it, and don’t beat yourself up about it. Give yourself the rewards you deserve for working hard and staying healthy this year, then get right back to your dedication to health and wellness.
